Case Study Home Services and Contractor Marketplace

Livehomebox

Livehomebox, a home improvement contractor marketplace, was competing for homeowner and contractor search traffic against HomeAdvisor, Thumbtack, and Angi, platforms with vastly larger marketing budgets and domain authority. Scaling organic traffic to match the platform's geographic expansion required a local SEO strategy that could outmaneuver generalist platforms in specific markets.

The Challenge

Livehomebox operates in one of local search’s most competitive segments: the home improvement and contractor-matching marketplace. HomeAdvisor (Angi), Thumbtack, Houzz, and TaskRabbit collectively dominate the national queries in this space, and their Domain Rating advantages in the 70s and 80s make head-to-head competition on broad terms effectively impossible for an emerging marketplace. Livehomebox’s growth strategy required a fundamentally different SEO approach: outcompete on specificity, not scale.

The opportunity was in hyperlocal search, city and neighborhood-level queries where national platforms provide generic results but local searchers want locally relevant contractors, recent work in their specific area, and service providers who know their local building codes and climate. Homeowners searching “kitchen remodeling contractors in Austin TX” or “best HVAC installers Charlotte NC” have high buying intent but specific geographic needs that generic national platforms cannot serve as authentically as a locally-focused marketplace. Livehomebox had strong contractor quality in their existing markets but no local SEO infrastructure to capture this intent.

The contractor acquisition side presented an equally significant challenge: skilled tradespeople searching “how to get more home improvement leads” and “best platform for contractors” were not finding Livehomebox despite the platform offering competitive pricing and lead quality. Organic contractor acquisition was minimal.

Our Approach

We built Livehomebox’s entire local SEO infrastructure from scratch, anchored on a 50-city programmatic landing page system targeting their active markets and planned expansion areas. Each city page was built with genuine local content: contractor count and specialty breakdown by market, recent project highlights, local license and insurance requirements by state, and service area maps, creating meaningfully differentiated content that national platforms cannot replicate at scale. The city page system was built with a template architecture that enabled rapid deployment into new markets as Livehomebox expanded.

For contractor acquisition, we built a dedicated contractor-facing content hub targeting the specific research queries tradespeople use when evaluating lead generation platforms. Eight trade-specific landing pages covered HVAC, plumbing, electrical, roofing, general contracting, painting, landscaping, and kitchen/bath renovation. A digital PR program targeting home improvement media, local news outlets, and real estate publications generated regional authority signals that city-level pages needed to rank in competitive markets. We also distributed a Google Business Profile optimization playbook to 400+ contractor members.

Key Initiatives

  • Built 50-city programmatic landing page system with genuine local contractor data, project highlights, and market specifics
  • Developed 8 trade-specific contractor acquisition pages (HVAC, plumbing, electrical, roofing, GC, painting, landscaping, kitchen/bath)
  • Created contractor lead platform content hub targeting 35 contractor research and evaluation queries
  • Distributed GBP optimization playbook to 400+ contractor members, improving local pack presence across markets
  • Secured 28 regional media and home improvement publication placements via digital PR program
  • Deployed LocalBusiness, Service, and FAQPage schema across all city and trade pages

The Results

The 50-city local page infrastructure generated 73,000 monthly organic sessions within 10 months of launch, entirely new traffic that had been captured by generic national platforms. Homeowner lead volume from organic grew 198% year-over-year, with city pages in Livehomebox’s top 10 markets each generating meaningful conversion volumes. First-page rankings were captured for contractor search queries in 38 of 50 target markets, achieving local organic visibility against platforms with 10 to 20x their domain authority through geographic specificity.

Contractor marketplace listings grew 156% over the 12-month program, with 34% of new contractor registrations attributing their discovery to organic content. Regional digital PR placements in 28 publications drove 41 high-quality backlinks. Domain Rating improved from DR 29 to DR 47, creating compound ranking leverage as the city page inventory expanded.

“Competing with HomeAdvisor and Thumbtack on their terms would have been hopeless. SaaS SEO showed us a local SEO strategy that plays to our strengths, genuine local market depth, rather than trying to outspend the nationals. The city page system has fundamentally changed our organic trajectory.”
— Marcus Caldwell, CEO of Livehomebox
