Is Your SaaS Website Invisible to ChatGPT?
When a prospect asks ChatGPT “what’s the best [your category] tool?” — does your SaaS show up in the answer? For most companies, the answer is no. Not because the product isn’t good enough, but because the website isn’t optimized for how AI systems decide what to cite.
What We Found Auditing 50 SaaS Websites
We ran GEO (Generative Engine Optimization) audits across 50 well-known SaaS companies. Scores range from 0-100 across six signals that AI systems use to decide whether to cite a source.
- Drift: 36/100 — One of the most recognized names in sales. Basically invisible to AI.
- Clearbit: 65/100 — Surprising gaps for a data company.
- HubSpot: 78/100 — Decent, but structured data is weak (30/100).
- Gong: 90/100 — Best in class.
The 4 Reasons AI Won’t Cite Your Site
1. AI crawlers blocked. Many companies locked robots.txt for SEO and accidentally blocked GPTBot, ClaudeBot, and PerplexityBot. If AI can’t crawl your site, it won’t cite it.
2. No llms.txt. The emerging AI indexing standard — like robots.txt but for language models. Over 80% of SaaS sites are missing it.
3. No structured data. FAQPage and Organization JSON-LD are direct AI citation signals. Product pages without schema are largely invisible to AI responses.
4. Thin content. AI won’t quote a 200-word page. Companies getting cited have deep, comprehensive pages that answer real buyer questions.
