Google Rolls Out Preferred Sources Feature in the U.S. and India
After weeks of testing, Google has officially launched the Preferred Sources feature in the United States and India! 🎉 This new addition allows users to choose which websites they’d like to see highlighted in the Top Stories section of Google Search.
What’s the Buzz?
Google shared that this feature is moving beyond the Search Labs beta phase with a goal to enhance user control over search experiences. Now, users can pick their favorite sites, whether that’s a beloved blog or a local news outlet, to ensure they catch the latest stories that matter to them.
How Does It Work?
Currently, this feature is available in English for users in the U.S. and India. Here’s how you can start customizing your experience:
- When you perform a search, look for the Top Stories section.
- Click the ⭐️ (starred icon) located right next to the Top Stories header.
- You’ll then have the option to select your preferred sources, provided those sites are regularly updating content.
Once you’ve made your selections, Google will prioritize displaying new articles or posts from your chosen sites in the Top Stories when they align with your search query.
Insight from Google
According to Google, users really enjoy having the option to select various sources. In fact, over half of the users tend to choose four or more sources to follow. This personalization means more relevant news at your fingertips!
Are You a Labs User?
If you’ve been part of the Labs program, good news! Your selected sources from there will continue to apply as you navigate this new feature. Plus, you’re welcome to change your preferences anytime if your interests shift.
For Publishers
Google has also expanded its information for publishers regarding this feature. Surface-level insights suggest that showing up as a preferred source can significantly drive traffic to your site — a win for anyone in the publishing game!
So, consider creative ways to encourage your loyal visitors to choose your site as their top pick. It could be a fantastic opportunity to boost your visibility and engagement!
